Fast growing double tearing modes in a tokamak plasma

چکیده
Configurations with nearby multiple resonant surfaces have broad spectra of linearly unstable coupled tearing modes with dominant high poloidal mode numbers m. This was recently shown for the case of multiple q = 1 resonances [Bierwage et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94 (6), 65001 (2005)]. In the present work, similar behavior is found for double tearing modes (DTM) on resonant surfaces with q ≥ 1. A detailed analysis of linear instability characteristics of DTMs with various mode numbers m is performed using numerical simulations. The mode structures and dispersion relations for linearly unstable modes are calculated. Comparisons between lowand higher-m modes are carried out, and the roles of the inter-resonance distance and of the magnetic Reynolds number SHp are investigated. High-m modes are found to be destabilized when the distance between the resonant surfaces is small. They dominate over low-m modes in a wide range of SHp, including regimes relevant for tokamak operation. These results may be readily applied to configurations with more than two resonant surfaces.

Comparison between resistive and collisionless double tearing modes for nearby resonant surfaces
The linear instability and nonlinear dynamics of collisional (resistive) and collisionless (due to electron inertia) double tearing modes (DTMs) are compared with the use of a reduced cylindrical model of a tokamak plasma. We focus on cases where two q = 2 resonant surfaces are located a small distance apart. It is found that regardless of the magnetic reconnection mechanism, resistivity or ele...
متن کاملExponentially growing tearing modes in Rijnhuizen Tokamak Project plasmas.
The local measurement of the island width w, around the resonant surface, allowed a direct test of the extended Rutherford model [P. H. Rutherford, PPPL Report-2277 (1985)], describing the evolution of radiation-induced tearing modes prior to disruptions of tokamak plasmas. It is found that this model accounts very well for the observed exponential growth and supports radiation losses as being ...
متن کاملInteraction of scrape-off layer currents with magnetohydrodynamical instabilities in tokamak plasmas
A simple theoretical model is developed which describes how current eddies are excited in the scrape-off layer SOL of a large-aspect-ratio, low, circular cross-section tokamak by time-varying magnetohydrodynamical instabilities originating from within the plasma. This model is used to study the interaction of SOL currents with tearing modes and resistive wall modes in a typical tokamak plasma. ...
متن کاملSawtooth pacing by real-time auxiliary power control in a tokamak plasma.
In the standard scenario of tokamak plasma operation, sawtooth crashes are the main perturbations that can trigger performance-degrading, and potentially disruption-generating, neoclassical tearing modes. This Letter demonstrates sawtooth pacing by real-time control of the auxiliary power. It is shown that the sawtooth crash takes place in a reproducible manner shortly after the removal of that...
متن کاملMicro-tearing modes in the mega ampere spherical tokamak
Recent gyrokinetic stability calculations have revealed that the spherical tokamak is susceptible to tearing parity instabilities with length scales of a few ion Larmor radii perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. Here we investigate this ‘micro-tearing’ mode in greater detail to uncover its key characteristics and compare it with existing theoretical models of the phenomenon. This has been...
